DC Soccer & MD Int’l Soccer League (MISL) Join Forces For Hispanic Outreach Event

On Saturday, March 15th, DC Soccer and the Maryland International Soccer League (MISL) joined forces to host a pre-season Hispanic community outreach event. Coaches, players, and families from the league were invited to lend a hand to field preparations at High Point High School in Beltsville, MD. As a reward for their hard work each participant received a new pair of Nike soccer shoes.

MISL maintains four soccer fields in partnership with High Point High School. With a few weeks remaining before the spring 2008 season, much work was left to be completed to prepare the fields for competition. Armando Portillo, MISL’s President, put the word out to the league through email, phone, and announcements on VIVA 900 and 1600 AM where Mr. Portillo is a regular personality on soccer talk shows.

The turnout was great on a sunny, but brisk day. Mr. Portillo and DC Soccer staff oversaw the work of the attendees which included men, women, boys and girls of all ages. The young children formed a long line across the sideline and walked each of the fields to pick up loose stones and trash while the adults and teenagers helped move some of the larger obstructions and put out markers so that all 4 fields can be lined for the first weekend of competition.

After a few hours of work, the attendees were all given new soccer shoes that were donated to DC Soccer from Nike. The cleats were in all different sizes and included indoor, turf, and outdoor models. The participants were excited to get a new pair of shoes just in time for the upcoming season. The young kids were especially excited because there were lots of great styles to choose from.

With the donation from Nike, DC Soccer was able to achieve one of its main goals; Hispanic outreach. The contact details of all the attendees were logged into the DC Soccer database so they can benefit from DC Soccer announcements and information. They were also introduced to DC Soccer and its resources for the sport in the DC area.

The event was a success. A total of 100 pair of shoes were donated and will be put to good use this season. DC Soccer is planning additional shoe distribution events on game days as the spring season commences.

“This is a great community partnership between MISL and High Point High School and we are honored to be a part of it and have a way to add value. We know the soccer shoes were a big hit but we also saw people taking great pride in investing time into their home fields.” – Ian Oliver, President, DC Soccer
