DC United kicks off their MLS season Saturday, March 10th at 7:30pm vs conference rivals Sporting KC.

Dwayne DeRosario returns to lead the team on the field as the team is increasingly optimistic about a successful campaign. With the signing of Albanian forward Hamdi Salihi as a Designated Player, the return of Chris Pontius and Branko Boskovic from injury, and the increased experience of Andy Najar the team, on paper, seems capable of creating many goal scoring opportunities from several positions.

The signing of Emiliano Dudar as a center back also should provide much needed depth in the position alongside Brandon McDonald and Dejan Jakovic. This should also allow for Perry Kitchen to move into a defensive center midfield position.

Bill Hamid returns in goal more confident given his offseason trainings with the US U23 and full National team, and training stint with EPL side West Brom.

Doubts remain about DC United’s outside back situation, however the arrival of Robbie Russell gives some veteran leadership to the right side, while several players, including Daniel Woolard are fighting for the left back spot.

Sporting KC returns many of its key players from last season in which they proved to be arguably the best team in the Eastern Conference over the course of the season.

Hi everyone,

Tune into your local ABC station or set your DVR for this Saturday morning to catch one of my friends/colleagues Tyler Spencer and all his great work with The Grassroot Project on Everyday Health TV! Check your local listings to see what time it’s on (9:30am in DC). Watch a preview of the show here: http://bcove.me/wk459dbm

Oh, and I have a cameo in this episode and girls from two of my travel teams will be featured as well! The episode will be online after the airing this weekend.

This was all in support of The Grassroot Project which uses DI college athletes to deliver HIV prevention and life skills activities at local elementary and middle schools in DC. Ethan Zohn, a good friend, reality TV star, and founder of Grassroot Soccer hosts Everyday Health on ABC which is a series celebrating health projects young people spearhead.

Upon joining DC United in a midseason trade with the New York Red Bulls for midfielder Dax McCarty, Dwayne De Rosario went on to score an impressive 13 goals while earning 7 assists in 18 games. He was a revolution for DC United, so much so that he was named the clubs Volkswagen MVP award, the teams Golden Boot winner and also the Fan’s Choice.

He finished the season with a total of 16 goals and 12 assists, earning the Leagues Budweiser Golden Boot in the process.

In addition to all of the goals and accolades, De Rosario brought an energy back to the DC United team that was lacking at times during the year. While DC United surely missed the injured Chris Pontius down the final stretch, there were moments in games in which it looked like De Rosario was completely unstoppable, especially against Toronto FC and RSL when he recorded hat tricks.

DC United went into Saturday night’s game against conference rival Chicago Fire knowing that anything less than a victory would be extremely hard on their playoff ambitions. With the score ties at 0-0 heading into the final minutes of the game, Santino Quaranta drew a foul in the box from Chicago’s Costa Rican defender Gonzalo Segares. Star forward Dwayne DeRosario stepped up and gave DC United the 1-0 lead with only stoppage time to go to the delirious pleasure of the home crowd.

Then the impossible happened. The Chicago Fire went on the offensive in desperation for an equalizer. Within a minute, Gonzalo Segares had made amends, deftly touching a ball back for Sebastian Grazzini to accurately pick out a corner of the goal from the top of the 18 yard box. Dramatically, it did not end there, with DC United capitulating once again in the 94th minute, this time Gonzalo Segares combining neatly with substitute striker Orr Barouch before squaring to Diego Chaves to tap home as the DC United team and faithful fans looked on in utter disbelief.

DC United takes on Portland Wednesday, October 19th in a knockout game for both teams. Even with a victory, DC United will need serious help catching the Chicago Fire and New York Red Bull for the final playoff spot.

DC United continues to show steady improvement over the second half of the 2011 regular season, Ben Olsen’s first in charge as head coach. Following the fantastic and necessary acquisitions of Dwayne De Rosario, to add quality to the attack, and Brandon McDonald, to add stability to the defense, they have gone 3-1-2 (W-L-T) in their last 6 games and moved into a position in the table that allows them to believe they can make a run in the playoffs, something the DC United fans have been craving since the disappointments of the last few seasons. Against Chivas USA on September 10th United put in arguably their best performance of the season. Winning 3-0, Dwayne De Rosario was involved in 2 goals while forward Chris Pontius contributed 3 assists. Charlie Davies was the benefactor of De Rosario and Pontius’s crafty work, scoring a hat trick to announce his return from a barren run of goals in recent games.

Next up for DC United is another game out West against the solid Seattle Sounders. They then return to RFK for 2 crucial home games, on Wednesday September 21st against Chivas USA and then on Saturday September 24th against 2009 MLS Cup Champions Real Salt Lake.

DC United won their first home game since May 4th, using two goals from Chris Pontius and three second-half goals to defeat the expansion Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday before 11,738 at RFK Stadium in the nation’s capital. Pontius scored in stoppage time of the first half to open the floodgates after an even opening stanza. Rookie Joe Willis, making his debut in the nets following Bill Hamid’s red card last weekend and Steve Cronin’s woeful display in relief, came up huge to tap Camilo’s free kick off the bar and somehow ended up with the ball in his hands following a mad scramble directly in front of his net. Assistant Coach Chad Ashton, who manned the touchline in place of Ben Olsen, who was also red carded the previous weekend, said of Willis’s performance, “At the start of the week we, as a group, decided we were going to let them [ Joe Willis and Steve Cronin] battle it out over the course of the week. It was a good battle – they both did a good job. Joe [Willis] was just a little bit better during the course of the week.”

The Pontius goal in stoppage time of the first half came after great work from near the touchline by Dwayne DeRosario, who evaded two Whitecaps defenders and delivered a swerving ball to the far post that Whitecaps goalie Jay Nolly, who struggled mightily on the night, could only parry into the path of a sliding Pontius. United continued its form into the second half, scoring two minutes into the second period, with Nolly again heavily to blame. Santino Quaranta sent a long diagonal ball that landed at the feet of a surging Andy Najar. Najar headed towards the end line and blasted a shot from an acute angle that deflected off of Nolly and into the net. This second goal seemed to dampen the enthusiasm of the away side, who have yet to win in 13 away fixtures this season. They did have an excellent chance to get back into the game in the 65th minute when Jonathan Leathers sent a beautiful low cross into the box that found giant French striker Eric Hassli, but Hassli’s shot from point-blank range was expertly parried by the quick reflexes of Willis on his goal line, and United effectively killed the match some five minutes later after a flowing move that ended with Nolly giving up a juicy rebound from substitute Stephen King’s shot that Pontius, named Player of the Week on Monday, slammed home with authority from the edge of the six-yard box. DeRosario and King combined again for the fourth goal in the 81st minute, with King taking DeRosario’s feed and taking a nice touch by his marker before slotting a worm-burner past Nolly to seal United’s emphatic victory. United had been struggling for weeks to gain three points at home. Pontius heralded the importance of the victory, stating, “We needed this as a group.” United, winners of two of their past three, will head to Chicago on Thursday for a Conference match up with the Fire.
